The Aasra centre, located in Pahar Ganj, near the Delhi railway station hosts, on a temporary basis (up to 1 year maximum), around sixty street children who mostly arrive by train. Objectives: health care, finding families or placing them in a permanent home.To go further in its support and ensure that children from the Aasra centre have a healthy and balanced diet, Main Tendue has planned, together with the Salaam Baalak, to fund part of the daily breakfast for this centre.
The Egis teams in India wanted to get involved with the Main Tendue Charity Action in Delhi and the Salaam Baalak Trust to play a part in the financing of this nutritional programme, for a period of 8 months.
So Egis is taking part in the fight against the exploitation of street children and helping the education and social integration of these children.
Main Tendue Charity Action in Delhi was established in 2005 and since 2011 it has been an association under French law, which brings together French expatriates in Delhi and Indian and French-speaking people of other nationalities.
The action of Main Tendue is to provide financial, logistical and human support to Indian NGOs working with disadvantaged women and children. These NGOs are small structures located in Greater Delhi, and are now ten in number.
It was when looking for sponsors to fund the NGOs it supports that Main Tendue approached Egis India. Given the specific nature of the Salaam Baalak Trust (intervention with children living around train stations), Egis made a decision to offer this NGO its support.
Salaam Baalak Trust was founded 25 years ago by Mira Nair, an Indian director who has been well-known since the success of her film "Salaam Bombay". Every year, this NGO is responsible for nearly 4,500 street children, boys and girls together, dispatched to 6 different centres including some near the New Delhi Railway Station. Each centre has a different aim: day care and medical care, searching for families, permanent homes, schooling, vocational education and training.
Besides the contribution of volunteers to the running of the centre, Main Tendue has occasionally been involved in: work to make safe the terrace where children play and relax, buying a washing machine, contribution to summer holidays.
