Egis to conduct a study on the provision of a European GNSS-based rail safety service

Egis' Aviation BU is applying its expertise in the field of GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) for aviation to the rail sector, which faces similar requirements for safety and integrity of satellite positioning systems.

The IMPRESS project is a new H2020 mission evolution study awarded by the European Commission’s (EC) Directorate-General for Defence, Industry and Space (DG-DEFIS). Egis Aviation and Rail teams will be working in partnership with Thales Alenia Space and Noordwijk Navigation B.V. to develop a new integrity concept for railway applications in Europe. It will also be defining the associated rail safety service, based on the use of the European satellite navigation system Galileo and the EGNOS (European Geostationary Navigation Overlay Service) augmentation system.

The results of the study will feed into the EC roadmap to decide on the next steps towards the adoption of a European Railway Safety Service based on EGNSS applied to the railway signalling infrastructure.

The European rail industry, supported by European Union institutions, is working towards the implementation of a European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS) and in particular a common signalling system for Europe. The aim of this harmonisation is to reduce the costs and technical and operational complexity of railways.
