A406 Motorway

South Mâcon bypass and crossing of Saône flood plain

A 10 km motorway bypass in a flood prone area to connect two major roads and relieve congestion in the Saône-et-Loire Department.

France
Mâcon
Date : 2011 (completion of works)

Project overview

The A406, bypassing the city of Mâcon to the south, is a logical step in ensuring continuity of the Central Europe-Atlantic road link connecting the A40 motorway from Geneva to the RN79 national road towards the city of Moulins.

Its main role is also to provide a bypass for local traffic to the south of the city of Mâcon. This is expected to account for two-thirds of the bypass traffic and will help to relieve congestion in the city.

The A406 will contribute to the economic development of the greater Mâcon area by serving business parks and, notably, by providing a direct link to the airport. The technical complexity of the project lay in the construction of 10 km in a flood prone area.
