Egis, in association with Systra, to carry out design studies for future metro in Medina, Saudi Arabia

The Medina Metro Development Authority (MMDA) has just awarded Egis, in association with Systra, a contract to carry out the design studies of the future metro network in Medina. The contract relates to three lines (green, blue, red) stretching a total of 95 km, including 25 km underground and 48 km overhead.

The project is part of an ambitious plan initiated over the past few years by Saudi Arabia to develop and modernise its transport infrastructure. As the second holiest city in the country, Medina has to deal with an influx of several million pilgrims each year.

The metro is due to enter into service in 2020, with the project divided up into two distinct phases.

 

The consortium’s assignments

The consortium will be tasked with carrying out the feasibility studies and the preliminary design for the metro, including the preparation of invitation to tender documentation for “Design and Build” contracts. Over a 12-month period, the project team based in Medina will draw on all of Egis’ expertise required for this huge project: civil engineering, architecture, environment, rolling stock, signalling, telecoms, operating strategy, etc.

This new contract comes as a complementary addition to the metro services provided currently by Egis in the Middle East in the fields of project management and works supervision contracts. Indeed, since 2013, Egis has been in charge of the project management and construction supervision of three lines of the future Riyadh metro, in partnership with Systra and the American firm Parsons. Egis is also active in Qatar on the project management of the Doha metro (civil engineering of its yellow line, civil engineering and equipment of Musheireb and Education City stations), and more recently on the project management of the overhead and ground-level sections of the Doha metro.

Olivier Bouvart appointed Chief Executive Officer of Egis Rail

On 4 March 2015, Olivier Bouvart was appointed Chief Executive Officer of Egis Rail. Previously Deputy CEO, he replaces Hubert Magnon-Pujo, who remains Executive Director of the “International and Major Projects” division.

 

Aged 49 and a graduate of Grenoble Management School, Olivier Bouvart has acquired 20 years of experience in the field of public transport and railway engineering, both in France and abroad.

Olivier Bouvart joined the Egis group in 1994 as administration and finance manager at the firm Scetautouroute. In 1996 he became Chief Financial Officer of Semaly (Lyon metro design consultancy) and supported its subsequent international development through the establishment of subsidiaries in Ireland, Portugal, the UK, Morocco and Singapore. In 2004, he was named Senior Executive Vice-President of the company.

In 2007, he was one of the key contributors to the development and growth of Egis Rail, the urban and rail transport specialist formed by the merger of Scetautouroute and Semaly. In 2009, he was appointed Deputy CEO of the organisation. He was then to deploy his expertise in the operational and financial management of the firm and its foreign subsidiaries, its strategy and its organic and external growth.

A leading figure in the development of Egis throughout the world, he most notably contributed to the establishment of the Group’s comprehensive offering in India, Brazil and the Middle East.

Olivier Bouvart is a member of the Egis group executive committee and of the boards of directors of Egis Algérie and Egis India. He is also a participant in the strategic committee of Egis Engenharia e Consultoria, the Brazilian subsidiary established in Curitiba.

Grand Paris Express: Egis to advise Société du Grand Paris for its communications activities

Egis, heading a group of firms also comprising Lowe Strateus (the corporate communications consultancy) and BDC Conseil (a transport-specialist project communications consultancy) has won a contract to assist Société du Grand Paris, the transport authority in charge of the future Grand Paris Express automatic metro, with all of its communications over the next five years.

 

The consortium will advise Société du Grand Paris in establishing its institutional communication strategy and its project-based communications.

It will be tasked with designing and implementing all of the Société’s corporate communication activities and steering the communications consultancies dealing with the different sections of the Grand Paris Express project. It will also manage the award, coordination and supervision of all of SGP’s contracts relating to its communications.

This contract is totally unprecedented in the fields of communications and the management of high value-added projects, in terms of both its scale and the wide range of professional specialities on which it will call.

From the very start, around twenty consultants and specialists from Egis will be allotted to the assignment and this headcount will be stepped up progressively.

With this contract, Egis reinforces its positioning as a leader in strategic consulting to regional authorities and major project developers.

Doha metro, Qatar : Egis, in association with Louis Berger, wins project management contract for all elevated and at grade sections of the Doha metro

Qatar Railways Company has just awarded the Louis Berger Egis Rail Joint Venture (LBER JV) project management of the elevated and at grade sections of the Doha metro.

 

 

This contract concerns extensions of the Red line towards the north and south, in addition to an extension of the Green line towards the west.

Involving construction of 16 km of metro, a large part on viaducts, and including 6 stations, civil engineering works for these extensions and their station fit out, all carried out as part of design development contracts with contractors, with completion scheduled for 2018.

More specifically the LBER JV is responsible for design review, supervision and commissioning of works and all project management responsibilities involved in an operation of this scale. To fulfil this mission the association LBER will put into action a team of up to 150 professionals over a period of 48 months.

This contract follows a first contract awarded in 2012, after an international tender process, involving project management of both the civil engineering works on the Gold metro line (boring of the tunnel running through the city centre of Doha, serving multiple stations), and civil engineering and fit out of 2 important network stations: Musheireb (in the city centre), intermodal node for the urban transport system and urban development hub, and Education City (West), which will in time enable connection of the urban transport and regional rail networks.

The Doha metro network is a major development directive for transport infrastructure in Qatar, particularly in view of accommodating the 2022 World Cup football. Implemented in 2 phases, this network will represent a total of 231 km by 2026, via the construction of 4 metro lines (Red, Blue, Green and Gold).

The first development phase will be operational by 2019, with the construction of 76 km of lines (60 km underground and 16 km elevated) and 26 stations. The metro network will link the airport to the city centre and to the future stadiums.

Egis wins contract for extension of Doha West wastewater treatment and recycling plant in Qatar

In order to cater to the needs of the increasing population of the city of Doha and protect water resources, the Qatar Public Works Authority, Ashgal, has just appointed Egis to carry out the design review and supervise the construction works of the new extension of the Doha West wastewater treatment and recycling plant.

 

The current facility is already the largest operating sewerage treatment facility in the country, located 20 km west of Doha.

Designed, built and operated by Degrémont, a subsidiary of Suez Environnment, the plant has been in operation since March 2010.

In 2011 it was expanded for the first time, taking its capacity from 135,000 to 175,000 cu m/day and serving an estimated population of 650,000.

This second expansion project is a continuation of the successive extensions to the plant. Its objective is to increase the plant’s treatment capacity to 180,000 cu m/day, dealing with the wastewater of the city of Doha’s 1 million inhabitants.

For this new extension, Ashgal chose the same tried and tested technologies that have proved effective in the past: the secondary biological treatment and the tertiary treatment which makes use of ultra-filtration membranes. The recycled water can be re-used to irrigate green spaces and market gardens and to replenish groundwater, which helps to significantly improve the management of the resource.

Over a period of 29 months, Egis is responsible for carrying out the design review and works supervision of this extension. The plant must remain in working order throughout the entire works phase, and operations must cause the least possible interference to the ongoing treatment processes.

This new contract strengthens Egis’ presence in Qatar, where it is already actively involved in major projects such as Doha Expressways and the Doha metro. In 2014 the group generated a turnover of around €33 million in the country.

Egis and atelier Villes & Paysages, members of the EPCM consortium for the light rail line in Luxembourg

On 12 February 2015, Mr. François Bausch, Minister for Sustainable Development and Infrastructure, and Mrs. Lydie Polfer, the mayor of the city of Luxembourg, announced the award of the engineering, procurement and construction management (EPCM) contract for the Luxembourg LRT system to the Luxemburgish companies Paul Wurth Geprolux, Luxplan SA, Beng architectes associés and Felgen, in partnership with atelier Villes & Paysages and Egis, the consortium leader.

 

The economic and demographic growth of the national capital and its surrounding region has in recent years led to a considerable increase in passenger travel, consequently requiring the construction of a light rail line running from Luxembourg-Findel airport to the future national sports stadium at La Cloche d’Or.

This 16.2-km line with 24 stations will be operational along its entire length in 2021. A first stretch is to be commissioned in the second half of 2017 to serve the city centre and the Kirchberg plateau, home to most of Luxembourg’s economic activity as well as the European institutions. The line will also include a 3.6-km section without overhead lines, with vehicles “flash-recharging” at stops (through a ground-based power system).

The consortium’s will be responsible for comprehensive project management, an assignment which comprises comprising project design, construction tendering and contract award, works supervision and acceptance, including testing, coordination & planning and safety.

The assignments cover:

  • the transport system
  • all of the operating systems
  • public utilities
  • and wall-to-wall urban planning and redevelopment in the city centre.

Egis upgrades airfield facilities at Riyadh Airport

The King Khaled International Airport is currently undergoing a large development and expansion programme that aims at increasing capacity in a near future. This programme is indeed necessary to allow the airport to accommodate the rapidly growing air traffic.

Serving the city of Riyadh, the capital of the country, King Khaled International Airport is the second biggest airport in Saudi Arabia, after Jeddah Airport. Today the airport hosts circa 20M passengers each year and the current expansion programme will extend capacity to 35M.

 

As part of this programme, the General Authority of Civil Aviation (GACA) of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has awarded Almabani General Contractor the contract for the design and construction of the required enhancements. Egis was nominated as design consultant of Almabani. For the first time in the airport infrastructure domain Egis will perform the full design under the BIM (Building Information Modeling) concept. Egis will also provide full technical support during construction.

The scope of works for this project covers the following airside facilities: new taxiways; new cargo apron; rehabilitation of existing taxiways; extension of the existing fuel line; and miscellaneous drainage improvements.

Egis is already working on an ongoing project at Riyadh Airport and providing technical support to the Saudi Arabian Trading and Construction Company (SATCO) for an operations & maintenance contract of airside equipment & systems. Egis’s scope of works covers the new Passenger Boarding Bridges (PBBs), 400Hz power units and preconditioned air (PCA) systems.

Through this new project, Egis reinforces its position as a partner of choice for the region’s fast growing airports in order to better prepare them for large-scale influx of passengers. Thanks to a complementary expertise in airport and air traffic management (ATM), Egis is also currently working on another major neighbouring airport on integration and validation activities for ATM equipment in an air traffic control tower.

Egis and ICAD to develop commercial business in the Middle-East and North Africa

Egis and ICAD have signed a strategic partnership at the end of 2014 with the objective of jointly developing commercial business in the Middle East and North Africa.

This partnership was signed by Cédric Barbier, Director General of the Egis subsidiary specialising in aviation and Sh. Mohammed Bin Laden, President of ICAD.

 

The two companies are already collaborating in a project focused on the integration and commissioning of air traffic management and communication, navigation and surveillance systems of a new control tower at a major middle eastern airport. The companies actually have strong synergies in their systems engineering activities in aviation, particularly in design, integration and validation of airports and air traffic control systems.

Through this agreement, teams from both companies will work closely together in order to develop synergies and propose solutions that cater for the needs of the ambitious Middle East and North Africa aviation markets.

This agreement emphasizes "the will to jointly propose performance solutions to airport and air traffic management stakeholders in an area where the growth of air traffic is around 5% per year for Africa and displays double digit values for the Middle East. New ambitious airport projects are planned in Jeddah, Riyadh, Dubai, Kuwait and Bharain as well as other major Middle Eastern gateways "said Cedric Barbier.

This new agreement is a strong sign of Egis strategy in the development of its activities in this geographic area, particularly in the Middle East where the group is expanding its aviation team and will be moving to a new regional office in Dubai. Egis has a long history in the Middle East and has completed a significant number of aviation projects since 1975. The company’s major projects in this area include Al Udeid Airbase design and PMC (1980); Design of the new terminal at Jeddah Airport (2008); and Technical and financial audit of the New Doha International Airport (2007).

Business & Environment prize 2014 : Egis receives « Biodiversity and Business » special prize of the jury For its 3D bat trajectory mapping tool

As part of the Business & Environment prize 2014 awarded by the Minister for Ecology, Sustainable Development, Energy and ADEME (Agency for the environment and energy management), Egis received the special prize of the jury « Biodiversity and Business» for its Bat3Data innovation.

Amongst the most endangered species on the planet, bats have seen their natural environment change and their movements affected by all different types of projects (urban, infrastructure, wind farms). The innovative Bat3Data tool designed to assist their preservation, enables different bat species to be identified, monitored and their trajectories memorized in 3D.

An innovative tool

Developed in conjunction with Cybério (company specialized in signal analysis), Bat3Data enables tracing and following of the typical bat trajectory within their environment. This process of 3 dimensional GPS localized tractography (ground and altitude coordinates), uses on site recorded noise emissions, via a network of sensors, and digital treatment of collected sounds. An analysis of the bat population and its movements at a specific site is thus able to be carried out, distinguishing between the species and the flights of each one present.

By identifying the bats trajectory, Bat3Data can envisage necessary adjustments to avoid eventual collisions (adapted passages, vegetation to guide bats in mid-flight helping them to orient themselves, etc.).By improving knowledge of each one of the species, the tool is also able to propose eco design solutions for future infrastructure projects, for wind turbines, for urban development, etc.

Multiple benefits

In operation since 2013, the Bat3Data tool has been tested with success on different infrastructure in France (motorway A406 –the Mâcon southern bypass, motorway A65 linking Langon to Pau).

Together with a geographic information system (GIS), it offers the possibility of mapping bat trajectories in 3D and the ability to analyse them with respect to elements that form part of land development projects. Applied for example to a bat bridge, the Bat3Data tool has shown that many of the bats, although found close to the bridge won’t use it. Different means of improving the functionality of bridges have been able to be highlighted; changing the surface to enable detection by the bats, additional vegetation to improve functional connections. With assistance from Bat3Data these corrective actions are able to be envisaged.

Areas for application of BAT3data are vast, impact studies and wide scope environmental evaluations, environmental management plans (natural or urban), environmental observation…. This understanding of regions, new for ecologists, enables refining of design for ecological development.

Brazil: Egis furthers its development strategy with the acquisition of engineering firm Lenc

This acquisition comes as part of the Group’s  development strategy for Brazil, instigated in 2011. With Lenc, Egis strengthens its foothold  on the Brazilian engineering market.

 

A locally-acknowledged engineering firm

Established in 1975, the São Paulo-based engineering firm Lenc with its 450 employees is one of the leaders in the road building market, covering fields ranging from preliminary studies to project management, work supervision and inspection. It also operates nearly 2,500 km of roads. The company runs a nationally-acclaimed materials testing laboratory and possesses several geotechnical surveying facilities. Over the past ten years it has also extensively developed its activities in the environmental field.

Listed among the top 25 Brazilian engineering firms by the journal O Empreteiro, Lenc’s 2013 turnover reached €40 million, generated entirely in Brazil. Its main clients are public sector contracting authorities in the transport field and privately-owned firms in the environmental sector.

Lenc’s most noteworthy references include the design and works supervision of the São Paulo orbital motorway (Rodoanel Mario Covas), the program management of improvement works on the Tietê-Maranà waterway (1,100 km) and impact studies for Petrobras’ offshore oil exploration activities.
