WestConnex: opening of M8 in Sydney

Fulton Hogan Egis O&M Pty Ltd (FHEO&M) has just successfully commenced maintenance and incident response services on Sydney’s brand-new motorway tunnel, the WestConnex M8.

The 9 km twin tunnels will provide motorists with a traffic-light free link between the Sydney suburbs of Kingsgrove and St Peters. The M8 forms part of WestConnex, Australia's largest road infrastructure project.

Egis, through its Australian subsidiary Egis Projects Asia Pacific, and Fulton Hogan Construction each hold 50% of the shares in FHEO&M.

FHEO&M has been involved in pre-operations activities since the start of construction in 2016, such as design review and development and implementation of the asset management system. The opening has been achieved in close collaboration with our client, road concessionaire WestConnex | Transurban, who is responsible for delivery and operations of this $4.3 billion project.

FHEO&M is now responsible for servicing the following sections of WestConnex, which have been successfully opened / transitioned into the WestConnex network over the past 3 years:

  • WestConnex M4, consisting of the 5.5 km New M4 Tunnels (since 2019) and the 7.5 km M4 Widening project (since 2017).
  • M5 East, a 10 km motorway including two 4 km tunnels and a smaller 550 metre tunnel (since early 2020).
  • WestConnex M8, 9km of twin tunnel and open motorway interchange and ramps.

Since its incorporation in December 2015, FHEO&M has grown into an organisation with over 100 employees and developed strong in-house capabilities in maintenance (civil, mechanical, electrical, ITS, fire safety), asset management, incident response and traffic management.

With this contract, Egis demonstrates its position as a leading tunnel operation and maintenance provider in Australia and worldwide, with 96 km of tunnels under contract in 10 different countries.
