Cairo metro: Egis is working on the modernization of the line 2


Operating since 1996, the Cairo Metro line 2 is 21.5 km long and includes 20 stations: 12 underground, 6 at-grade and 2 elevated. Today the line is suffering from constant strong growth of passengers with around 1.80 million passengers/day, obsolescence of systems, and lack of modern comfort for passengers.

The European Investment Bank has signed a technical assistance cooperation agreement with the Egyptian National Authority for Tunnels (NAT) to conduct a feasibility study for the rehabilitation of line 2.

The study will define and describe the upgrade and renewal of the line 2 systems, including infrastructure and rolling stock, necessary to meet the capacity and passenger demands of the coming years; and to extend the life expectancy of the system for 25 more years. Egis, as member of the Joint Venture awarded to carry out all projects of the ERI technical assistance program, is managing and executing this study, started in March 2020.

This technical assistance operation is financed under the European Investment Bank’s Economic Resilience Initiative (ERI). The ERI is EIB’s response to the European Council’s call to intensify its support for the EU’s neighbourhood, in pursuit of economic growth and the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Define the best scenario for the upgrading of the Line 2

The main outcomes of the study carried out by Egis staff will allow NAT to choose the best course of actions in order to renew the line 2 systems. The features of the line 2 upgrading are to address the coming increasing passenger numbers by reducing the headway to 90 seconds (today 160s); to extend all the various metro systems life by 25 additional years and to avoid future spare parts shortages due to obsolescence. Some of the systems need to be refurbished to be modern state of the art and with new features to meet modern passengers’ demands. Egis will also prepare the technical tender documents.

This project is strengthening Egis' experience in renovating existing metro lines, a key challenge for transport authorities for the years to come.
