The renovation of the Richelieu quadrilateral area that houses the special collections of the BnF started in 2007.
The works represent one of the major projects led by the Ministry of Culture and Communication and will allow the global transformation and modernization of the library. Its aim is to renovate building and equipments, extend the services provided to the public and to consolidate the French National Library’s role as a scientific and cultural pole of excellence.
The first phase, completed at the end of 2016, allowed opening the courtyard of honor, the glass gallery, the Labrouste hall, the Labrouste reading room and the central bookstore, new spaces for the Performing Arts Department and the reading room of the Manuscripts Department.
The second phase of the renovation was launched beginning of 2017 and concerns the zone along Vivienne road. The Mazarine gallery, one of the most precious areas of the new museum of the BnF, is scheduled to open in 2020.
