Egis just signed a new contract with the National Authority for Tunnels, in Egypt, for the design and construction Supervision of the Alexandria Raml Tram rehabilitation.
A rehabilitation for the historic LRT network of Alexandria
The Alexandria tramway network began operating in 1863. It was the first tramway in Africa and one of the first in the world. The network consists of two lines: the Raml Line and the Al Madina Line. Both lines were refurbished in the 1960’s and are still in operation today.
The general objective of the project is to turn the Raml Line into a modern and efficient tramline with up-to-date infrastructure, systems and rolling stock, while improving, when possible, the associated urban environment, for cars, pedestrians and residents.
The joint venture led by Systra and composed of Egis, ACE and Projacs (an Egis Group company) won this project and is responsible for the design, procurement and construction supervision of the project until the end of the guarantee period.
Egis, key player in the project
Within the joint venture, Egis is in charge of the project systems design management, the integration and interface management. Egis staff will also take care of the design and implementation supervision of telecom and operation control center, automatic fare collection, overhead catenary system and traction power supply.
Including the design and procurement period, the construction and the guarantee period, Egis teams will be deployed on the project for at least 5 years.
This project is anchored in the continuity of the alternative studies of the public transport network of the city carried out by Egis in 2013. This also confirms the implantation of Egis in Egypt and more globally in the Middle East.
