Egis becomes ISA portfolio manager and improves its building expertise

Egis has just upgraded its membership in the ISA (International Sustainability Alliance) to become a portfolio manager. As a founding member, Egis has been supporting the development of this global benchmark tool since its inception in 2010. As a portfolio manager, Egis can now offer its clients a rating and performance analysis through a database of 150 million m² of commercial assets in 51 countries, with an estimated value of more than £150 billion.


The only French Engineering ISA portfolio manager

Issued from BRE, the British research Centre for buildings, the ISA’s ambition is a global benchmark tool allowing comparing buildings’ environmental performances.

As the only French engineering company as portfolio manager, this offer adds to a more comprehensive range for Egis regarding sustainable building advisors: Green Building in use, BREEAM in use, LEED EBOM, energy management, multitechnical operations, energy transition, building master plan and diagnosis of real estate.

Having a sound knowledge of one’s real estate assets associated to an ISA benchmark is an excellent starting point for Egis engaging further in an energy and environmental transition.

Egis and Setec awarded one of the largest engineering contracts for the construction of the ‘Grand Paris’ metro

Two important engineering firms join forces to serve Grand Paris. Egis and Setec have just been awarded the EPCM contract for the systems of the Grand Paris transport network (lines 15, 16 and 17), encompassing 100 km and 40 stations. This is one of the biggest engineering contracts for the construction of the Paris region (Ile-de-France) metro project.

100 km of lines and 40 stations

On completion, the Grand Paris metro project will comprise 166 km of new lines and 57 new stations, most of which will connect with current and future transport services. This new network will considerably increase the scale of the public transport offering in the Ile-de-France region.

The project owner Société du Grand Paris has just awarded the first major contracts for project management consultancy and for engineering, procurement and construction management (EPCM) services.

The Egis-Setec consortium (led by Egis) was named preferred bidder for one of the largest of these contracts: the system EPCM for lines 15, 16 and 17, covering 100 km of lines and 40 stations, and worth a total of €96 million.

The consortium’s assignments

The 18-year contract is for the EPCM of system equipment: rail track, high current, overhead line, low current, platform screens, industrial maintenance workshop equipment, electromechanical equipment and pipes and ducts.

With this new contract, Egis and Setec reaffirm their active presence in the field of public transport engineering, notably in Ile-de-France, and gain further acknowledgement of their capabilities in automatic metro systems and equipment.

Egis supports the development of green curved procedures for rotorcraft

Egis is leading a consortium gathering Pildo Labs, CGX AERO and DSNA that will provide support on the definition and implementation of curved procedures for rotorcraft operations. These curved paths require high-precision guidance and enable rotorcraft to avoid noise sensitive urban areas.

CleanSky: an environmental challenge

Air traffic is expected to grow continuously in the next decades. Reducing the environmental footprint of aviation has therefore become a major challenge for industry stakeholders and including for rotorcraft operators. Working towards greener skies, the European Commission has created jointly with the aviation industry the Clean Sky Joint Undertaking. Its objective is to develop technologies that mitigate the impact of air transport on the environment (reduction of aircraft external noise, emissions and fuel consumption).

One of the initiatives launched by CleanSky JU in this perspective is the CARE project (Curved Applications for Rotorcraft Environmental enhancements). The project consists in developing new curved IFR (“Instrument Flight Rules”) procedures for rotorcraft using satellite-based augmentation systems (GNSS-SBAS).

For this two-year project CleanSky JU has selected a consortium led by Egis Avia and also formed by the French air navigation service provider (DGAC/DSNA), Pildo Consulting and CGX Aero. The consortium will provide support in the design and implementation of curved GNSS-SBAS IFR procedures for rotorcraft.

The first step of CARE consists in defining the criteria to design these procedures based on the specific characteristics of rotorcraft and also on the use of satellite-based positioning system (GNSS-SBAS).

Secondly, the project team will identify the benefits brought by GNSS-SBAS guidance and the implementation of such procedures.

Finally, the consortium will conduct a safety assessment of these operations and ensure their promotion towards the potential stakeholders.

A more sustainable air transport

Low noise flight operations

These new curved trajectories are of major interest as they allow rotorcraft to avoid flying over noise sensitive urban areas, especially thanks to the use of high-precision GNSS-SBAS guidance for approaches and departures.

Low noise procedures are a major green leap forward and they increasingly capture the interest of airports and operators as an effective solution for noise abatement in residential areas overflown by rotorcraft.

Improved safety

GNSS-SBAS guidance also enhances both the precision and the performance of rotorcraft navigation. In particular, curved procedures enable rotorcraft to operate under IFR in challenging environments such as mountainous areas and to fly safely steep approaches to airports or heliports that are difficult to access or located in densely populated areas. This is particularly important for medical air transport to city hospitals or for helicopter operations in the vicinity of airports without interfering with the surrounding fixed-wing aircraft traffic.

Through this project Egis is once again demonstrating its active involvement towards a more sustainable air transport.

SYSTRA/EGIS joint venture wins 425 million Euro Saudi Arabian metro contract

SYSTRA/EGIS with American partner PARSONS has won the 425 million Euro contract to supervise construction of lines 1, 2 and 3 of the Riyadh metro in Saudi Arabia.

On 1st August 2013, Riyadh’s Development Authority, Arriyadh (ADA) awarded the €425m project management contract for its future metro network to the PARSONS, EGIS and SYSTRA joint venture, led by Parsons. The contract covers project management and construction supervision for Lines 1, 2 and 3 of the Riyadh metro and accounts for nearly half of the engineering services for the 6 lines.

In a joint statement, Pierre Verzat, CEO of SYSTRA and Nicolas Jachiet, CEO of EGIS said, “We are proud to be working with our colleagues from Parsons on this ground-breaking public transport system for the people of Riyadh. This contract recognises the quality of French engineering expertise and technical know-how. Our Joint Venture brings together and combines the expertise of two great French railway engineering companies, and shows how their complementary skills can win contracts of this size and complexity and deliver them in record breaking time.”




This complex and highly prestigious metro project will be completed in record time

Riyadh, a city with a population of 5.7million, has a saturated road network. Given that its population is set to grow to 8 million by 2030, it was essential to increase the capacity of its public transport system.
In December 2012, Arriyadh Development Authority (ADA), Riyadh city's development authority, launched an international tender amongst the world's largest engineering firms to manage the project and supervise the construction of 6 metro lines, divided into 3 work batch packages.
This is an extremely prestigious project due to its sheer size and very tight delivery deadlines. The future network must be delivered within 5 years and will comprise 6 automated lines and 92 stations covering 177km - 60km underground, 36km overground and 81km of viaduct sections.
For passenger safety and comfort the project incorporates the latest features for modern automated metros.

Joint Venture responsibilities

The PARSONS/EGIS/SYSTRA JV won two of the three work batch packages covering Lines 1, 2 and 3 – a total of 108km and 55 stations. Approximately 1 000 people will be required to work in Riyadh to complete the work.
Working for ADA, the JV will validate studies, oversee and coordinate construction work, accept engineering structures and approve pre-commissioning tests.
The BACS Consortium (managed by Bechtel and Siemens) won design-construction tenders for Lines 1 and 2, and Arriyadh New Mobility (managed by ANSALDO STS, Impregilo and Bombardier) for Line 3.

A long-term involvement in this project

EGIS also worked for ADA for a number of years on the preliminary design studies for the current metro project. In 2012, EGIS produced the specifications for tender bids by Consortiums for design-construction work and over the past few months has helped ADA with candidate selection.

Egis awarded concession for Ostend-Bruges and Antwerp airports in Belgium

On 19 July 2013, the Flemish Government officially named Egis as the winner of two public service concession tenders for the operations of Antwerp and Ostend-Bruges airports, for a 25 year term.

Carlo Ciattoni, Project Director at Egis, applauded “the trust that the Flemish Government has placed in Egis, and the spirit of teamwork that reigned throughout the establishment of this public-private partnership. It augurs well for the early days of this long cooperation which is to last for 25 years.”

Egis and the Government now have a six-month transition period during which to make final arrangements for the transfer of both responsibilities and staff to the two Egis subsidiaries set up for the purpose: LEM Oostend-Brugge, and LEM-Antwerpen [1].

These LEMs will in particular be responsible for the day-to-day management and operation of the platforms and for the upkeep of part of their facilities. The maintenance and development of so-called ‘basic’ infrastructure (runways, taxiways, airport access roads, etc.) will continue to be carried out by the Region via public airport development companies (LOMs[2]) which are also currently being formed.

The concessionaire companies will naturally be responsible for commercial development in order to deliver the revenue needed to fund the €7 million investment programme planned by Egis for these two platforms.

Jean-Paul Desgranges, the Director at Egis in charge of steering these two LEMs during the pre-operational phase, commented: “Antwerp and Ostend-Bruges are two very complementary airports. Antwerp, despite its short runway, has a considerable role to play in the economic promotion of the Region by developing short-haul European business traffic. Ostend-Bruges, with its 3,200m runway that can accommodate all types of aircraft, can become the gateway to Flanders for tourist traffic. It can also be considered a serious alternative to other airports in Belgium and even in Northern France for both outbound tourist traffic and freight transport, whilst of course complying with current environmental legislation.”

Several airlines have already shown an interest in using one or the other of these airports, and a number of new routes are likely to be launched in the coming three years.

The two airports directly employ a total of 250 people, not counting the indirect jobs generated both on the platforms and in ancillary sectors such as the tourist industry.

Inauguration of Carabane landing port

Egis, head engineer

On Saturday 6 July 2013, Senegal inaugurated the new landing port at Carabane. Plans to relaunch the Dakar – Ziguinchor sea route started up after the September 2002 disaster of the sinking of MV Le Joola. The former capital of Casamance thus sees the completion of a key element of infrastructure for its island, which is both a national heritage and a tourist destination. Egis was head engineer for the construction of the landing port.

A project with ambition

Egis has acquired long-standing knowledge of Senegal since the 1960s, in particular through design studies carried out for the Dakar landing and the full engineering assignment for rebuilding the port of Ziguinchor. It was in 2009 that the group was selected to carry out the engineering, procurement and construction management for the Carabane landing port.

The aim of Senegal, through its Fisheries and Maritime Affairs Ministry and the National Maritime Affairs Agency (ANAM), is the overall enhancement of the Dakar - Carabane - Ziguinchor sea service via the construction of a safer landing dock. The new landing port guarantees totally safe mooring conditions to modern vessels operating the service.

The project had to meet political, economic and social concerns in a particularly sensitive climate. The new landing port primarily aimed to support the regional production of Carabane and trade with the Dakar market in order to develop and open up the Casamance region.

The inauguration was also the opportunity to pay tribute to the famous Senegalese art painter Malang Badji, who passed away in April 2013.


Egis’ assignments

The Carabane landing port is an achievement delivered at the end of a several-stage design and construction supervision process managed by Egis teams.

They initially carried out the design studies for the landing dock including:

  • Carrying out an assessment of the current state of affairs and the analysis of requirements with contributions from the local population and the State and national authorities;
  • Selecting the best site allowing for unassisted mooring of vessels and accounting for currents and the forecasted change in the seabed;
  • Formulating the development plan for a landing dock suited to natural, economic, logistical and environmental conditions on a preliminary design level (APS)
  • Producing the Advanced Preliminary Design (APD) of the landing dock following a series of topographical, bathymetric and geotechnical surveys;
  • Drawing up the Request for Proposals (RFP) for construction

Egis also conducted the environmental and community impact survey on the island, home to many historical artefacts and candidate for UNESCO World Heritage listing.

Finally, the teams at Egis also carried out the supervision of construction works by ensuring compliance with the philosophy of the project through to its completion.

A second Turkish motorway operation contract awarded to Egis within a year

On June 24th 2013, Egis signed a contract for the operation and maintenance of the Gebze-İzmir motorway in Turkey with OTOYOL AS, who is the concessionaire towards the Turkish General Directorate of Highways (“KGM”). This new contract is the second one for Egis in Turkey, following the Eurasia Tunnel awarded to Egis in December 2012 (a 5.4km twin-deck tunnel under the Bosphorus).

Egis, the 50% shareholder of the operating company

OTOYOL YATIRIM ve IŞLETME A.Ş. (“OTOYOL”) was selected by the Turkish General Directorate of Highways (“KGM”) as the private concessionaire for the Project.

Following the execution of the Concession Agreement between the parties in September 2010, OTOYOL AS reached financial close for the Phase 1 on 15th of March 2013.

OTOYOL AS has been established for the purpose of the Project by five Turkish companies (Nurol İnşaat ve Ticaret A.Ş. Özaltın İnşaat Ticaret ve Sanayi A.Ş., Makyol İnşaat Sanayi Turizm ve Ticaret A.Ş., Yüksel İnşaat A.Ş. and Göçay İnşaat Taahhüt ve Ticaret A.Ş. and one Italian company, Astaldi S.p.A..

After a competitive bidding process, Egis has been selected by OTOYOL AS as its operation partner.

Egis will be the 50% shareholder of the operating company. The other 50% will be hold by the shareholders of the concession company.

The Operator will perform pre-operational services, operation, maintenance and tolling services for OTOYOL AS for a period of 22 years and 4 months.

Details of the project

The Gebze-İzmir Project is a toll motorway project procured by the Turkish General Directorate of Highways under a Build, Operate and Transfer (BOT) Model. This Project is the largest BOT project in Turkey to date. It includes 420 km of motorway (2x3 lanes) between Gebze (on the North shore of İzmit Bay) and İzmir, as well as a 3000m suspension bridge crossing İzmit bay, three tunnels with an approximate cumulative length of 6km and 20 toll stations. The project will be implemented in two phases. The first phase from km 0 (Gebze) to km 58 will include the 3000m Izmit bay suspension bridge which is one of the longest suspension bridges in the world by the length of central span.

The forecasted level of traffic for the first phase is about 40,000 vehicles per day.

The operation of the first phase will start at the end of 3.5 years of works and the second phase is forecasted to be under operation in mid-2020.

This new success strengthens Egis’ activities in tunnel and motorway operation, maintenance and tolling activities in Turkey.

Egis strengthens its development strategy in the port and maritime domain

Port engineering and sea works, especially in the off-shore field (major complex projects and works at great depths) offers sharp forecasts worldwide.

By setting up Egis Ports, Egis is boosting its advance in this high potential sector. Pierre Aristaghes is Chief Executive Officer of the new subsidiary, that gathers the group’s various expertise.


An emerging domain

Egis aims at supervising trading ports and specialized terminals (bulk, mining, liquefied natural gas (LNG), etc.), marinas, extensions at Sea (artificial islands, etc.) and issues related to the struggle against erosion and coastal flooding. Egis assembles its particular expertise and creates a dedicated branch that will perform on 3 trades:

  • Port development consultancy (economic and institutional features of operating ports and waterways)
  • Harbor structures design (dams, wharves, piers, etc.) and the overall design of ports and terminals
  • Maritime hydraulics and coastal engineering

Egis Ports is managed by Pierre Aristaghes who joined the group at the end of 2012.

Landmark projects

In the last years, Egis teams brought their expertise to many projects as:

  • Infrastructure studies of Weda Bay’s ore port (Indonesia) which is one of the largest untapped nickel ore deposits in the world
  • Technical assistance for the construction of Zadar’s new port (Croatia), World Heritage Site by Unesco
  • Assistance for Kribi’s new deep water port (Cameroon) and operating planning
  • Full project management of the New Littoral Road (Reunion Island) to be set a few hundred meters from the shore, between Saint-Denis and La Possession
  • Member of the Ecological Restoration for the shore in the Great Port of Marseille, using Egis’ advanced know-how in Ecodesign.

Pierre Aristaghes named Egis Ports’ CEO

 A graduate of the French Ponts et Chaussées engineering school, Pierre Aristaghes began his career in 1981 with BCEOM (now Egis International), in the Ports and Inland Waterways Department (PVN). One year later, he joined the Technical Centre of the French Ministry of the Sea (“CETMEF”) where he was in charge of the sea port activity and returned to BCEOM in 1986 as Special Adviser to the General Manager.

He joined Bouygues TP in 1990 as Manager of Studies and Development and was, in particular, responsible for tunnel and port studies. He worked on the design of variants for the Beirut seafront (Lebanon), the first Tangiers Med container port (Tangiers, Morocco), a container terminal in the Dominican Republic, as well as the hydraulic design of seawalls in Monaco.

Manager of Sea Works Engineering at Saipem (a subsidiary of the Italian Oil Group ENI, a specialist in the engineering and construction of industrial complexes) since 2004, he notably developed winning concepts for two other ports in Tangiers and three methane terminals in Peru, Algeria and Australia. He was also awarded a major contract for the design of a complete port complex in Australia, and worked on urban marine extensions in Monaco and on Reunion Island.

Egis will supervise the construction of the new Liège hospital (Belgium)

The future CHC (Christian Hospital Centre) of Liège, Belgium, focuses on a better welcoming of patients, on an architecture at the service of health care, and on a revamping of the brownfield site on which it will be built. Egis has been chosen as the Managing Constructor for this complex until its opening in 2017.


Engineering at the service of patients

For that operation, the CHC entrusts Egis with the task of Construction Management, independently of the companies involved. Thanks to its multidisciplinary expertise, Egis will apply its mastery of hospital-related techniques, of costs and delivery times for an exhaustive operation, and its know-how in the organisation and connection of interfaces (companies, concession holder, operating company). Its expertise in Project Management covers the Study and Works phases, and includes a specific responsibility for safety and security on the worksite. A team of 12 Egis engineers is dedicated to this project.

A high-tech hospital

The new hospital designed by the architects AAH (Artau-Assar Architects-Hoet + Minne) will open its doors in 2017 and will pool the activities of the clinics of St-Joseph (Liège), L'Espérance (Montegnée) and St-Vincent (Rocourt). Designed in view of providing ergonomic solutions to its users (patients, health care providers, suppliers), the hospital will offer the patients a personalised pathway, in a truly modern healthcare institution:

  • Low-Energy building;
  • Architecture focusing on light (wide openings, natural light in the living areas);
  • Advanced medicine and avant-garde equipment within a human environment;
  • Nice view to the city; easily accessible by car, public transportation or bike ('Ravel' cycle route);
  • Large parking area (2,000 spaces).

The hospital will offer a wide range of health care (consultations, hospitalisations, medical examinations), with 720 standard hospital beds and 120 day-hospital beds. Its 2,800 staff (employees, physicians and freelance professionals) will be provided with an ergonomic and human environment.

This certification testifies to the excellent quality of the ecological and sustainable management and operation of this real estate complex

Egis, Generali and Microsoft: a joint approach for a dual environmental certification in use

Egis teams have worked as Environmental Project Management Assistant (AMO) for the dual certification 'BREEAM in Use' and 'HQE Exploitation®' (High Environmental Quality in Use) obtained at the end of March 2013 for the EOS office building at Issy-les-Moulineaux.


A first in France

The EOS building, delivered in 2009, is one of the largest set of offices to be certified 'HQE Construction' in the Paris region. The project, jointly initiated by the owner, Generali Real Estate, and the main lessee, Microsoft France, has been accompanied by Egis, which enabled them to obtain the 'HQE Exploitation®' and 'BREEAM in Use' certifications thanks to its Project Management Assistance work.

Such a joint project, supported by the owner and the main lessee of a building with a view to improving its environmental performances, is a first in France.

EOS obtains a dual 'HQE' certification

The operating teams, advised by Egis, had been working for almost 3 years on improving the environmental performances of the site and have been able to generate energy savings of more than 25%, proportionally to the gradual increase in the occupancy of the building.

Today, the teams have obtained a dual certification in Use by passing the Anglo-Saxon certification 'BREEAM in Use' with a score of 'GOOD' for each of the 3 topics it covers: Asset Performance, Building Management, and Organisational.

This certification testifies to the excellent quality of the ecological and sustainable management and operation of this real estate complex.
