Egis helps to deliver India’s first International Dam Safety Conference

Egis has assisted successful organisation of India’s first International Dam Safety Conference, held at Kovalam, Thiruvanthapuram, Kerala on 23rd and 24th January, 2018.

The event is one of several initiatives pioneered under the Dam Rehabilitation and Improvement Project (DRIP), financed by the World Bank, for which Egis has been the Engineering and Management Consultant to the Central Water Commission since January 2014.

After three National Dam Safety Conferences in 2015, 2016 and 2017, this was the first international event in the series.  Around 550 delegates were in attendance, with around 10% from countries outside of India including Australia, Bhutan, Canada, France, Germany, Indonesia, the Netherlands, Spain, Sri Lanka, Switzerland, Uganda and the USA.

The plenary session included presentations from eminent speakers :

  • A.B. Pandya, Chairman of the International Commission on Irrigation and Drainage (ICID),
  • Prof. Anton Schleiss, President of the International Commission on Large Dams (ICOLD),
  • Satoru Ueda, Lead Dam Management Specialist, World Bank
  • Dr. Martin Wieland, Chairman of the ICOLD Committee on Seismic Aspects of Dam Design.

Around 30 national and overseas organisations, including Egis, showcased their products, services and technologies in stalls around the conference venue and 48 papers were selected for oral presentation of which seven were from members of the Egis DRIP team.

The Egis team currently consists of 40 staff on DRIP, of which 30 are in New Delhi and ten across the seven participating states of Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka, Uttarakhand and Jharkhand.

Aside from strengthening the dam safety institutional setup in the country through such capacity building activities, the DRIP team is also supporting the rehabilitation and improved operation and maintenance of 223 selected dams.
