North-West, East and Far-North regions
Date : 2011-2014
Client: EDF National authorizing officer in Cameroon

Project overview

This programme aims at implementing sustainable solutions that meet the real needs of populations, upon their request and with their participation, while taking into account the socio-economic constraints of the regions where the Programme is being carried out. The intervention area comprises 54 municipal territories, with a total population of approximately 2 million.

This programme has three strands:

  • improving the living environment of populations, notably through the implementation of the following infrastructures:  rural dirt roads, drinking water supply systems, schools, health care centres, establishment and strengthening of management committees;
  • improving the revenue sources of populations, through the identification and the implementation of income-generating activities in the following fields: plant production (small-scale vegetable growing, animal-drawn cultivation, plant nurseries and orchard planting, etc.); animal production (poultry and pig farming); post-harvesting and processing (onion preservation, mills, feed mills, etc.); handicraft; accompaniment and capacity-building of beneficiaries;
  • supporting Decentralized Territorial Authorities (DTAs), through management and organizational capacity-building of DTAs, the development of the own resources of municipal territories and the implementation of municipal income-generating activities.

The implementation of the project is based on principles such as 'on-demand' support provision, participatory approach, the implementation of actions by the stakeholders ('learning by doing' strategy), the consideration of sustainability and environmental aspects and the consideration of issues related to gender and vulnerable populations in all the actions implemented.
