For years, mine rehabilitation programs have relied on soil targets designed for farming and grazing. However, what if the true goal is not agriculture at all? This research explores whether agricultural soil benchmarks are suitable indicators for assessing post-mining woodland habitat. The findings reveal that successful woodland ecosystems can exist outside many traditional agricultural measures.
A study co-authored by Sarah Green Goldberg, Senior Environmental Specialist, Samantha Breslin, Discipline Leader in Environmental Management and Approvals, Brendan Roddy, Principal - Landform and Soils, and Peter Berghofer from BHP Mitsubishi Alliance in Australia, examined over 30 years of rehabilitation experience and soil monitoring data from BMA mine sites. The results challenge a longstanding assumption: soil standards developed for agriculture may not be the most appropriate measures for rehabilitation aimed at restoring native woodland habitats. Despite many rehabilitated areas successfully developing woodland characteristics, their soils often do not meet conventional agricultural benchmarks.
What was the purpose of the study?
The primary aim was to evaluate whether agricultural soil targets are valid indicators of success for woodland habitat rehabilitation following mining activities. The research reviewed soil monitoring data from rehabilitation areas, natural reference sites, and topsoil stockpiles collected across multiple BMA mine locations.
What did the research find?
Many rehabilitation and natural woodland reference sites did not meet traditional agricultural soil targets; nevertheless, they still supported woodland habitat outcomes. The data suggested that rehabilitation areas do not necessarily perform worse than natural sites—both types of areas were capable of supporting woodland habitats. Additionally, many topsoil samples fell outside the proposed soil target ranges, raising questions about how soil suitability is determined.
What does this mean for the mining industry?
This research presents an opportunity to redefine rehabilitation success using evidence from actual woodland ecosystems, rather than depending solely on agricultural standards.
