The last 14.57 kilometers of Section 5 of the A1 Sibiu – Pitești Motorway have been completed and are now open to traffic, just 6 months after the previous opening of the section between Bascov and Băiculești. With this, drivers can now bypass Pitești and continue to Curtea de Argeș, traveling approximately 140 km from Bucharest on the motorway. Completion of Section 5 is an important milestone achieved in the Sibiu-Pitești motorway project.
Egis, a leading global firm in architectural, consulting, construction engineering, operations, and mobility services, is proud of the successful completion and opening to traffic of the entire Section 5, the road sector from Curtea de Argeș to Pitești, of the Sibiu-Pitești Motorway project. The official opening of the last 14.57 kilometers of this road section took place at the reception on June 11 of this year, approximately 6 months after the opening of the 15.7 km road section between Bascov and Băiculești road junction in December of last year.
For Section 5, being the end section (km 92+600 - km 122+950), the motorway route starts in the area of Curtea de Argeș and continues parallel to the Argeș River until the current ring road of Pitești Municipality. The route of this subsection is located in Argeș County and has a length of 30.35 km, beginning before the intersection with DJ 704H and ending after the intersection with DN 7, where the route aligns with the axis of the Pitești Ring Road, with which it connects.
The completion of the Băiculești – Curtea de Argeș segment of Section 5 Pitești – Curtea de Argeș of the A1 Sibiu – Pitești, which also includes the connection with DN73C, marks the first motorway lot inaugurated in 2025 by the National Company for Road Infrastructure Administration (CNAIR).
The opened section completes the entire section 5 of the A1 Motorway, and it features 12 bridges, 1 viaduct, and 1 important intersection – Curtea de Argeș road junction.
An important task
The route of the entire Sibiu-Pitești highway will run between Sibiu (the intersection with the Sibiu Ring Road) and Pitești (the intersection with the Pitești Ring Road) in the central area of Romania, covering a total length of approximately 123 km. The Sibiu-Pitești Highway is part of the Pan-European Transport Corridor no. IV, which crosses Romania from West to East in the direction of Nădlac-Arad-Timișoara-Lugoj-Deva-Sibiu-Pitești-Bucharest-Constanța. This highway holds major importance in streamlining traffic, making the shortest connection between the west and center with the south-eastern area of the country, and being the first crossing of the Carpathian Mountains at a maximum altitude of 840 meters.
The project is implemented by the National Company for Road Infrastructure Administration S.A., as the Beneficiary of the financing, and the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure, as the Intermediate Agency for Transport, and has as general objective the improvement of the economic efficiency of Romanian transport by shortening travel time between Sibiu and Pitești and ensuring national connectivity.
As part of this project, Egis provides supervision services for Section 5, Curtea de Argeș-Pitești, which includes the construction of 30.351 km of new highway, 3 road intersections, 21 bridges, a parking area, a service space, and two coordination and maintenance centers.
"After the recent success with this road sector, Section 5 – Sibiu-Pitești, the rest of the works, which are outside the actual motorway, are expected to be finished by September this year. We are pleased that we managed once again to deliver an exceptional result, several months ahead of schedule. We are proud of this important achievement in this project. The Sibiu-Pitești motorway has major significance for the big infrastructure in Romania, with many important commercial routes passing this way. For us, as engineers, it was critical to ensure the quality of the works and their framing in time, and we will continue to ensure that everything is in order during the warranty period following the completion of this construction," said Drasko Misulic, Project Coordinator at Egis in Romania.
Social, environmental, and community impact
The general objective of the Sibiu-Pitești motorway, as defined in the General Transport Master Plan (MPGT), is to improve the economic efficiency of Romanian transport by enhancing travel time between Sibiu and Pitești and consequently improving regional connectivity. The corridor's objective is to provide direct access to the Black Sea through a unified motorway profile, as well as to other countries via border connections.
Section 5 is the last of the five sections that divide the Sibiu-Pitești motorway, offering significant development opportunities for the communities in the area. It accommodates both freight and passenger traffic, streamlining traffic in the Pitești city area. The construction of this road segment also ensures an adequate level of road traffic safety and security.
The warranty period for this motorway section is 120 months.
