Tahiti-Faa’a Airport, operated by Egis, has reached a significant milestone in its environmental transition by achieving Level 3+ of the Airport Carbon Accreditation (ACA), awarded by Airports Council International (ACI).
This achievement confirms that the airport measures, reduces, and offsets its direct greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, while actively engaging its partners in this collective effort.
A certified and collaborative approach
The initiatives implemented focus primarily on:
-
Energy and technical efficiency measures for buildings (Scopes 1 and 2): Gradual replacement of backup generators and air-conditioning units, upgrading lighting systems, and raising staff awareness of eco-friendly practices. These actions have resulted in a 29% reduction in direct emissions (Scope 1) between 2019 and 2024.
-
Stakeholder engagement: Staff are informed about CSR issues and carbon footprint, with encouragement to adopt sustainable mobility solutions.
-
A reliable and certified offset mechanism²: Offsetting 1,653.2 tCO₂e for residual GHG emissions that cannot be reduced by other means, through improved cookstove projects in the Pacific (Fiji Islands).
In line with ACA Level 3+ requirements, the airport promotes and unites partners around the goal of environmental transition, formalised through a roadmap and participation in the Pacific Business Convention for the Climate (CEC) programme, as well as a letter of commitment to develop a sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) sector.
As both shareholder and operating partner, Egis supports the airport in implementing its strategy, prioritising local solutions—particularly those benefitting Polynesian cultural stakeholders and biodiversity, both on land and at sea. The aim is to maintain the airport’s strategic role for the remote territory of Polynesia, while acting as a catalyst for sustainable initiatives that protect its unique natural environment and cultural identity.
