Redevelop Nuku'alofa, Tonga's first city

Modernising urban services to improve the quality of life.

Egis provides technical assistance to local institutions to develop urban services in Nuku'alofa, in order to meet the growing population and its needs.

The main objectives of the project are:

Strengthening public services for urban service provision
Effective, efficient and sustainable water supply services
Sustainable solid waste management services
Improvement of other public services
Community awareness of public services

The project has important environmental aspects in its structure, as it aims to improve sanitation and solid waste collection services. In addition, attention has been given to the protection of vulnerable groups, the role of women, and gender issues.

Providing solutions that take into account the interests of the inhabitants.

Egis is responsible, in partnership with local PECG consultants, for assisting the various public service entities (Planning and Urban Management Agency, Tonga Water Board, Waste Authority Limited) to improve urban infrastructure and its management, in technical, financial and institutional aspects. This partnership with a local player allows Egis to better understand the specific challenges of the region.

In order to achieve the objectives set, Egis is setting up training for the staff of the beneficiary entities, including informal training in the workplace and traditional classroom training.

The concept of asset management and the practices that support it are also a pillar of Egis’ actions to establish sound management of public services.

In this way, Egis intends to ensure that the project is not only ecologically but also socially sustainable by working with the local government and taking into account vulnerable groups and the role of women in the project.

During the course of this project, Egis, the project leader, together with its local co-contractor PECG, provided various consulting services. The project is composed of 4 objectives:

Implementation of an effective flood risk management infrastructure
Reduction of non-income generating water:
Improved solid waste management and collection
Long-term resilience

An asset management plan provides support to strengthen the resources to operate, repair and maintain the drainage system, as well as to develop policies and processes to support women in the workplace.

Overall, this project improves the living conditions of the inhabitants, the management of the natural environment, and the economic stability of the region.
