Chernihiv's resilience: rebuilding after devastation and planning for a sustainable future
Chernihiv, situated between the Belarusian-Ukrainian border and Kyiv, was attacked by the Russian army on the first day of the invasion in March 2022. The city endured relentless shelling, resulting in tragic loss of lives, damage to buildings, and displacement of over half its residents. Critical infrastructure, including power, water, and gas networks, suffered extensive damage, along with major road networks and bridges.
In early April 2022, Russia lifted the siege as its advance towards Kyiv failed. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy declared Chernihiv a Hero City on March 6, recognizing its resilience.
Given the severe impact, establishing a comprehensive Digital Platform for the city's reconstruction became imperative. A well-thought-out master plan is crucial to address challenges, focusing on rebuilding infrastructure, revitalizing public spaces, and providing a strategic vision for sustainable development.
