The Dwight D. Eisenhower Veteran’s Memorial Bridge carries Eighth Street over the White River located in the City of Anderson, Madison County, Indiana. The most heavily traveled bridge in the county serves as the eastern gateway into downtown Anderson. At the time of construction, complex site conditions, including a railroad and utility building, led to multiple skews, span lengths, beam depths, and substructure types. All these challenges created construction details that eventually led to rapid deterioration of structural elements at critical locations. Due to continued deterioration of the bridge, the Owner initiated an alternatives analysis in 2009 to determine the best course of action. The study found that after serving Anderson and Madison County for nearly 50 years, the most cost-effective solution for the community was bridge replacement.
Because Egis was deeply involved in the inspection and the studies for this bridge, we developed a thorough understanding of the challenges that face the project and were able to provide unique insight into creating the best possible solutions.
