Automation and extension of an operational line
Lyon's metro line B, inaugurated in 1978, was facing obsolescence and growing saturation due to the increase in traffic. Sytral Mobilités therefore launched the Avenir Métro project to modernise lines B, D and A of the network and meet the sustainable mobility needs of the agglomeration.
It was decided to fully automate Line B to GoA4 standard (automatic driverless operation) and to extend it by 2.5 km to Saint-Genis-Laval. This double technical challenge was accompanied by specific constraints:
- Maintain daily operations by carrying out night work.
- Ensure the transition between the old system (GoA2) and the new system (GoA4, Alstom Urbalis 400 CBTC).
Coordinate the interfaces between the existing infrastructure and the new equipment. - Train the operators' teams.
- Remove the old systems that have become obsolete.
- Egis was chosen for this project because of its recognised expertise in managing complex railway projects and its in-depth knowledge of the Lyon network, acquired and developed since the design of the Lyon metro in the 1970s.
