From providing bespoke expertise to supporting key projects during the pandemic, we delivered high-value outputs on complex Network Rail projects, including:
Smarter Information, Smarter Journeys (SISJ)
The Smarter Information, Smarter Journeys Programme aims to achieve a step-change in customer experience by providing customers with clear, valuable information when they need it. We played a critical role in transforming the customer experience by managing commercial aspects of the SISJ programme. From negotiating contracts and setting KPIs to forecasting costs, we ensured tight control over budgets and efficient supplier management, resulting in tangible improvements in customer satisfaction and significant cost reductions.
Weather Risk Task Force (WRTF)
The Weather Risk Task Force is responsible for a programme and integration of weather management objectives across Network Rail. Our foresight and strategic commercial guidance helped secure early funding for the WRTF, ensuring financial stability and operational confidence.
Intelligent Infrastructure (II)
Intelligent Infrastructure is a five-year asset management transformation programme. By embedding expertise within the programme, we have supported a transformative shift to predictive maintenance. This proactive approach enhances asset reliability, minimises downtime, and ensures strategic objectives are met with precision.
PPE Commission
We supported Network Rail by leading the programme management and execution of mobilisation activities related to its new PPE contracts. Our management during Network Rail’s PPE supplier transition yielded over £1 million in savings. By identifying discrepancies, renegotiating contract and implementing operational efficiencies, we have significantly enhanced value and accountability in this critical project.
Network Rail Fleet Transition (NRFT)
Network Rail operates 9,700 road vehicles and is the 8th largest fleet in the UK. It is committed to the Government targets of:
- 25% of car fleet to be Ultra Low Emissions Vehicles (ULEV) by end of 2022
- 100% cars and van fleet to be Zero Emission Vehicles (ZEV) by December 2027
- HGV fleet by December 2035
We demonstrated innovative problem-solving in supporting Network Rail’s transition to Zero Emission Vehicles. Implementing an emerging technology requires a dynamic and pragmatic approach to address unknowns, increase confidence within the developed cost plan and deliver a consistent message to the business. This was achieved through meticulous scope alignment, MVP principles, and strategic procurement management.
Heritage Migration
The Heritage Migration Project focuses on migrating telecoms services from ageing assets to modern technology across 300 sites in multiple regions. Our contributions were instrumental in achieving cost avoidance of nearly £2.5 million, as part of a cumulative £25 million contract value. We also identified opportunities to strengthen contracts during pre-contract stages, ensuring future agreements mitigate risks and align with project objectives.
Network Rail Telecoms (NRT)
We provided embedded commercial management for a £40m suite of contracts, including surveys, design and maintenance services. Initially engaged for post-contract management, our success led to further pre-contract support to streamline processes and enhance governance. Our efforts directly identified £2.86m in savings and ensured that lessons learned informed future contract renewals, mitigating risks and improving outcomes.
