Crossing the country.
The Government of Romania undertook this ambitious project to ensure connectivity across Romania and to reach Europe faster. The complexity of this project is given in particular by the terrain crossed and by its extent with large implications for financing, implementation approach, contracting, design, construction.
Originally the project was entrusted to a single company to be performed under a design & build contract. The project was later split into lots with different contractors appointed under different work packages.
Since 2004, Egis has supervised each construction activity. This complex project involves dealing with numerous contractors, facing technical challenges and countless contractual matters.
The difficult terrain implies complex designs of many structures such as viaducts, tunnels, bridges, consolidation works design. Overall schedule and works programmes have been extended many times because of unexpected site conditions and a highly competitive market for the works contracts.
To date around 25% of the highway is operational, while remaining sections are under construction or being contracted for works.
