On May 17, a week before the opening ceremony of the Beskyd tunnel, Egis experts presented to  Ukrzaliznytsya top management and EIB the final version of the strategic plan for the development of the Ukrainian part of the Pan-European Transport Corridor Y.

Highly awaited new twin-track Beskydy railway tunnel in the length of 1822 meters - one of the most large-scale construction in modern Ukraine. It was built 30 meters from the old single-track one, built in 1886. But this technical improvement alone could not change the overall situation of the small amount of freight transit through Ukraine that was established during last 100 years. The comprehensive marketing plan developed by Egis aimed to turn state-owned Ukrzaliznytsia into an internationally acting multimodal transport operator on Corridor Y.

Based on the deep analysis of the international demand for the railway transportation trough Beskyd tunnel and referred to its potential capacity Egis experts stated that the new tunnel is expected to quadruple the current capacity of train traffic from 12 units per day to 46 in both directions over the next ten years.

In other words, elimination of the major bottleneck of the European transport Corridor V (where trains were obliged to wait at one end while trains pass in the opposite direction) together with the implementation of the new commercial policy by Ukrzaliznytsia could increase freight and passenger transit from EU to Ukraine up to 60%.

Briefly, the proposed by Egis actions plan will help to Ukraine fully monetize the important investment into Beskyd tunnel construction and achieve sustainable economic growth due to the required by European Union railway transit conditions. In the long term, prospective implementation of this project is the first step on the way to the real European integration of Ukraine.
