Opening of new Terminal 2 at Tocumen Airport

On April 29 2019, the new Terminal 2 at Tocumen Airport has officially been inaugurated by the President of the Republic of Panama and the Airport’s General Manager.

Egis has been playing a critical role in supporting ORAT (Operational Readiness and Airport Transfer) for the new terminal for 2 years now. Today, more than a hundred flights and more than a thousand passengers have already travelled through the new terminal since partial opening.

Preparation of the opening had been speeding end of March with an Egis team working with local staff since 28th March this year on familiarisation and training activities.

ORAT activities have included classroom theory sessions using a 3D model of the terminal developed by the Egis team, followed by practical visits on site of around 1.5 hours each. To reinforce this familiarization, each employee has been provided with a leaflet containing key information about the new facilities and a more detailed 60-page manual describing all the processes and systems implemented. To date, around 200 people have been through the familiarisation and training process.

On April 2, 2019, the first Evacuation Drill was held, which consists of verifying operationally with a group of 50 people the various evacuation routes of the new terminal through the boarding bridges. This first simulation was carried out in the reduced area of 5 gates which first opened.

Three days later the first Trial Operations took place, consisting of complete sequences of Departure and Arrival with 100 fictitious passengers. The Check-in, Security Inspection and Migration processes were performed in the existing terminal. Only the Embarkation and Landing processes were verified in the new terminal which will be opened as a "Pier" allowing 5 aircraft stands to be added, linking up with 33 existing stands.

These first operational simulations were fully developed and organised by the Egis ORAT team who has been working to ensure a smooth, secure and efficient opening of the terminal in close coordination with all teams involved.
