What technology cannot replace: leadership
Perhaps the most important paradox in this entire process is that the more technology-driven project management becomes, the more important the human factor becomes.
The reason is simple. Someone still needs to interpret the information, make decisions, negotiate priorities, manage conflicts, align teams, and perform many other critical functions. No model or algorithm can do all of this on its own.
In its research on leadership in the world’s largest and most complex projects, McKinsey concludes that large-scale projects require a particular set of leadership mindsets and practices to successfully navigate their multiple interfaces with communities. Technology can help us understand what is happening within a project. But we still need leaders who can decide what to do with that information.
The real shift, therefore, lies not only in the tools we adopt, but in our ability to transform management practices to respond to a more dynamic and complex reality. In the years ahead, infrastructure projects will test not only our technical capabilities, but also our ability to integrate new ways of working, collaborate across disciplines, and lead in environments where uncertainty will remain a permanent part of the process.
