Designing a major highway in Alberta: a showcase project for public infrastructure engineering
Summary: Highway 40, crucial for Alberta's highway network, handles significant resource traffic south of Grande Prairie. In 2018, Egis was tasked with designing and managing the construction of a 20-kilometer twinning project, beginning in 2021 and expected to finish by the end of 2025. The project includes infrastructure engineering such as highway and bridge design, geohazard remediation, utility coordination, intersection improvements, and highway illumination, addressing peak traffic of over 9000 vehicles daily. This presentation will discuss the design and construction challenges and solutions for enhancing safety in the corridor.

The challenges of replacing existing pot-bearings
Summary: Pot bearings are widely used in post-tensioned superstructures for their load capacity, guided articulation control, and extended service life. Longer post-tensioned structures often face issues with insufficient bearing sliding surfaces due to original designs not accounting for long-term effects like creep, shrinkage, or evolving seismic requirements. This paper will explore these challenges and offers insights and recommendations on maintenance and rehabilitation of post-tensioned bridges to enhance their longevity and reliability.
