Setting new standards in rail electrification
With more than 8.3 million people, the Greater Toronto Hamilton area is experiencing rapid growth. Its GO Transit system must evolve to meet future demand, with ridership expected to reach nearly 200 million passengers by 2040.
Launched in 2018, the On-Corridor project aims to create a fully integrated regional transit system, offering increased capacity and frequency by the mid-2030s. The project calls for railway electrification, transitioning from diesel locomotives to an electrified and interconnected network.
As part of the Technical Advisor (TA) team, Egis supports Metrolinx in all aspects of rail systems engineering :
- Electrification
- Rail transit power supply
- Signaling
- Operations studies
A major challenge is the lack of established national standards for 25 kV rail electrification in Canada. In fact, this project represents the first of its kind in the country. Egis is helping to define those standards through its extensive international experience in rail transit electrification and rail system integration.
We provide Metrolinx with strategic guidance, ensuring design decisions deliver long-term value and operational efficiency. This depth of experience enables our team to anticipate and mitigate challenges throughout the On-Corridor project.
