The COVID-19 pandemic, coupled with the recent wave of lootings, have caused significant disruptions to the South African economy. Many South Africans, particularly the youth, find it very challenging to fund their tertiary education and to enter the job market.
In line with the core values of the Egis Group, Egis Operation South Africa has quickly risen to lend a helping hand. The company has implemented a comprehensive bursary program through which young South Africans from disadvantaged backgrounds are now able to pursue studies in engineering and transport-related fields in local universities. The company provides a wide range of support to these students encompassing financial assistance, mentorship, internships, absorption in the job market and in the company – including involvement in community development initiatives.
Regarding community development, Egis has wasted no time in responding to the needs of the marginalised. During August, Leratong Joy for One Foundation, an orphanage based in Alexandra, one of Johannesburg’s poverty-ridden locations, became a beneficiary of the company’s generosity. The home currently has 20 orphaned children, many of whom suffer from chronic diseases and need basic daily supplies to live with dignity. To meet some of these needs, gift packs containing toys, toiletries, sweet treats, as well as a brand-new washing machine, were donated to the Leratong Joy for One Foundation by the Egis team.
Mr. Frank Pheta, Manager at the orphanage says: “We acknowledge the generous support from Egis Operation South Africa, and truly feel honoured. We hope that our relationship shall continue and grow.”
Speaking about the support received, Leratong Joy for One Foundation’s Manager, Mr Frank Pheto, says that had it not been for the vision and selflessness of Ms. Peggy Chauke, a retired teacher who founded the charity organization 20 years ago, and the generosity of donors such as Egis, the lives of the many orphans they support would be on the line. “We acknowledge the generous support from Egis Operation South Africa, and truly feel honoured. We hope that our relationship shall continue and grow”, says Mr. Pheto.
With initiatives such as these, the Egis brand is gradually becoming a recognisable and admired part of the social and economic South African landscape. This is something Mr. Laurent Bouchacourt says Egis is wholeheartedly committed to.
“This initiative is part of our bigger socio-economic development programme because we believe in South Africa and its future. With initiatives of this kind, we affirm our commitment to investing in the youth of South Africa. Egis is here for the long- term to help build infrastructure and to build decent lives” says Mr. Laurent Bouchacourt, CEO – Egis Operation South Africa.
